If you have one or more sexual convictions for offenses against minors under the age of 17 in the State of Texas, you are subject to additional restrictions on your liberties. While Texas does not have state-wide restrictions, it does provide for broad general guidelines and allows municipalities to enact their own ordinances to regulate where you can live and or be physically present. For those registrants who are on supervision, Texas law does establish a minimum distance of 500 feet from child safety zone as a residency restriction. Local ordinances may increase these distances.

You will need to be familiar with Child Safety Zones as well as any ordinances that are in place where you live or plan to live. We have compiled a list of ordinances that are in effect in Tarrant County to assist you in finding a place to live.

As a registrant with a conviction for a sexual offense against minors, you also need to be aware of what employment fields you may not be able to work in. Such jobs include:

  • Jobs involving minors – any position that puts you in close contact with minors, such as coaching, tutoring, or working with youth programs is likely to be off-limits.
  • Ride-sharing or public transportation – the Texas Transportation Code prohibits registrants from working with ride-sharing companies such as Uber or Lyft.
  • In-home services – If the job requires entry into a private home, you may not be able to work in this field.
  • Amusement rides – working at a theme park or on carnival grounds will generally be off-limits due to the high number of minors present.
  • Sexually oriented businesses – Adult bookstores, clubs, or similar businesses may be off-limits due to employer restrictions, local ordinances, or community supervision policies.
